STATEMENT OF TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
My Cuban upbringing has shaped the way I see the world and interact with my students. Living on an island made me view boundaries as obstacles to overcome. I aim to expand borders by teaching culture and global citizenship, preventing the estrangement that can arise when learning a new language or immersing in different literary and cultural contexts. My goals as an educator are to (1) empower students by nurturing cultural awareness and enthusiasm for our subject matter, (2) foster an inclusive and cooperative learning atmosphere, (3) leverage technology and authentic resources to engage students in the learning process, and (4) establish a platform to offer “instrumental” and “psychosocial” support to my students (Kram 1985).
